Our Commitment
The Royal Australian Mint is committed to keeping children and young people safe and has a zero-tolerance policy to child abuse and neglect in any form. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children by providing a friendly, inclusive and safe environment. We are focussed on ensuring that our staff and external providers are educated and informed of their responsibilities to protect and look after children.
As part of our commitment, the Mint:
- Has adopted and implemented the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.
- Has developed a Working with Young People Policy, a Child Safe Code of Conduct and Charter of Commitment for young people.
- Ensures all staff who are performing roles that facilitate activities involving children hold valid Working with Vulnerable People status.
- Undertakes an annual risk assessment to evaluate the risk of harm to children and young people and puts in place strategies to manage those risks.
Our operations and interaction with children
As a national cultural institution, the Royal Australian Mint has a remit to share the National Coin Collection with all Australians. Safety of children and young people is considered in the context of all activities, including visiting public spaces at the Mint in Canberra, engaging through our website or other online forums, and participating in education and public programs onsite, online or through outreach initiatives.
The Mint’s educational role is to provide an understanding of currency history and modern coin manufacturing methods to children, primarily school aged, through booked tours and general visitation. Staff understand the important and specific role they play in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the children and young people taking part in programs provided by the Mint. Our Working with Children and Young People Policy outlines how the Mint complies with each of the 10 National Principles within the child safe framework.
Annual Risk Assessment
The Mint undertakes regular risk assessments of our operations. Control measures are in place to ensure the Mint fulfills its commitment to the safety and protection of children and young people and meets its obligations under the Commonwealth Child Safe Framework.
The Mint’s overarching residual risk rating is low.
