Mintages

The mintage is a figure that specifies the maximum number of coins that will be produced of an approved design. Australian Coins are approved through a legislative Currency Determination process. A mintage is confirmed as part of this process. The Mint will not produce or make available to the public more than the determined mintage figure. The mintage figure will be published on packaging and relevant marketing material.

The Mint may release coins in different packaging formats. The maximum number of coins allocated to each format is referred to as the issue limit. The total quantity of these issues will not exceed the mintage of the coin.

The Mint may specify unlimited mintage for certain coins and coin sets. This means that the coin(s) may continue to be produced for a set period of time. Once the Mint ceases production, the final production quantity will be published in the following year’s Annual Report.

The total coins produced of an individual coin or coin set. This is reported in the Mint’s Annual Report.

Any coin that has a separate design or design element approved through the Currency Determination process is considered a variation. The mintage of each coin is independent of any other coin and will be published as such. Examples of this may include the addition of a privy mark or counter stamp to a coin.

The Mint issues certificates of authentication with most coins made to a proof standard. Each certificate will include the Mint crest, the coins specifications, and a signed declaration of authenticity from the Mint’s Chief Executive Officer.

Certificates for precious metal proof coins are numbered to confirm the authenticity of a coin as part of the mintage. Certificate numbers are distributed randomly.
