Australia is invited to wind back the clock to one of the nation’s most exciting moments — the switch to decimal currency — as the Royal Australian Mint throws a free Family Fun Day on Saturday, 28 February, from 10am to 4pm.
Celebrating 60 years since decimal currency was introduced, the day will be packed with colour, energy and hands-on fun for visitors of every age. The grounds surrounding the Mint will come alive with a festival-style atmosphere, featuring live music, a sizzling barbecue, face painting, family activities and plenty of interactive experiences that bring the story of Australia’s coins to life.
As part of the fun, the rare opportunity to head back-of-house for a factory tour of the coin production areas, will be available. Full terms and conditions can be found on the Mint’s website.
Families, collectors and first-time visitors can explore six decades of innovation and creativity in Australian coin design.
One of the standout attractions will be the coin swap, where visitors can exchange cash for circulating coins — including those elusive, hard-to-find coloured pieces. The ever-popular kids coin trade is also back, giving children aged 5 to 12 the chance to swap everyday coins for collectible ones — a simple and fun way to spark a lifelong interest in coin collecting.
Throughout the day, expert speakers will share fascinating behind-the-scenes insights into the coin-making process, revealing how Australia’s most recognisable designs are created. Inside the Mint, visitors can explore the coin museum and new decimal currency displays, discovering how coins have reflected Australia’s identity across generations.
Adding an extra layer of excitement, attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to press a special 60th anniversary coin. Featuring a commemorative design that reunites the beloved animals first introduced on Australia’s 1966 coins, this keepsake will be marked with an event-only ‘60’ countermark and will be available only at the Family Fun Day.
Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and relax in the covered outdoor areas or enjoy meal deals and kids’ options from the Mint Café and outdoor barbecue.
The event is wheelchair accessible and family friendly, with plenty of on-street parking available around and behind the Mint. Those planning to take part in coin trades or swaps are encouraged to come prepared for all weather — bring hats, layers, umbrellas, sunscreen and water bottles. Water refill stations will be available onsite.
The Family Fun Day will be held at the Royal Australian Mint, Denison Street, Deakin, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 28 February. Entry is free.
