The 2026 Our Animals, Our Country five-coin set being released on Wednesday, celebrates Australia’s native wildlife and the Indigenous language that connects people to Country.
The coins were designed in collaboration with Ryhia Dank (professionally known as nardurna), a contemporary artist who grew up in Borroloola (Gudanji Country), a remote community in the Northern Territory.
The five-coin set features the red kangaroo (marraji), emu (jagurrugurru), saltwater crocodile (mardumbarrayi), brolga (darramanji) and long-necked turtle (gulamandarrina), with each animal’s name presented in Gudanji language.
There’s also a one-in-ten chance of receiving a special coloured print coin featuring the saltwater crocodile, which replaces the non-coloured version.
For collectors wanting to explore the program further, additional products include $1 Privy Mark Uncirculated Coins featuring the five animal designs, a $2 Coloured Proof Coin and a $2 Silver Coloured Proof Coin. The proof coins feature a jurrgubadi or goanna.
Royal Australian Mint Chief Executive Officer, Emily Martin, said there was something really special about the joy of finding a coloured coin in your change.
“It’s an unexpected little surprise that can brighten your day, and I hope Australians have fun looking out for the colourful goanna coin when they shop at Australia Post.
“The Our Animals, Our Country collection is a gorgeous celebration of Australia’s native animals, brought to life through Ryhia Dank’s beautiful artwork. I love that each coin also introduces us to the Gudanji name for these familiar animals, giving families and collectors something lovely to discover together,” Ms Martin said.
Here’s how to join the fun: head to Australia Post, buy the Our Animals, Our Country coin set, pay with cash and also check your change. You could collect the special coloured $2 goanna till coin while you’re there.
Whether you’re a lifelong collector, starting a collection with the family or simply love Australia’s incredible wildlife, 2026 Our Animals, Our Country is an opportunity to bring a little piece of our natural and cultural heritage home.
