We Will Remember Them: Last Post Coins

Silver and uncirculated The Last Post coins against a sky background with "Coming Soon" text.

Few traditions hold the same emotional weight as The Last Post. Originally performed to signal the end of a soldier’s day, the bugle call has become a defining element of remembrance ceremonies across Australia. Played following the Ode of Remembrance, it precedes a minute’s silence, during which we reflect upon the sacrifices made by those who have served in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

This significance lies at the heart of the 2026 The Last Post coin design.

A bugler stands before a war memorial at sundown. At its centre, a bugler stands before a war memorial at sundown. Surrounding them, bars of music radiate outward like sound waves, mirroring the arc of the setting sun as it dips below the horizon. The relief underlying the colour print is carefully shaped to incorporate musical staves and bars, while the inclusion of symbolises the period of silence that follows the playing of the Last Post. The rests also reflect the Last Post’s role in signifying that our fallen soldiers have gone to their final rest.

Memorial steps cut across the composition, grounding the design in the physical spaces where remembrance takes place. The inscriptions ‘The Last Post’ and ‘Remembrance’ follow the curve of the coin, reinforcing the flowing motion of sound and time.

Colour plays a defining role. The central print features dusky oranges and deep purples, evoking the hues of twilight.

Subtle details complete the piece, including the designer’s initials “LA” near the rim, and the “C” Mintmark featured on the uncirculated and proof editions.

This release follows the Mint’s Dawn Service program, released in April 2026. Both programs honour remembrance traditions that are deeply ingrained within the Australian consciousness.
