A Tribute to Rugby: Wallabies and Wallaroos Commemorative Coins

In the lead-up to two major events in international rugby — the British and Irish Lions Tour and the Women’s Rugby World Cup — the Royal Australian Mint, in partnership with rebel, proudly presents new collectible coins celebrating the Wallabies and Wallaroos.

The Wallabies had their first Australian rugby team to tour internationally set sail for the British Isles in 1908. The English press tried to brand them “the Rabbits”, but the players had other ideas and chose the name “Wallabies” as a nod to their national identity. The Wallabies stormed to victory, winning 33 of their 39 matches. It was a tour that forged a sporting legend. 

In 1993, the Wallaroos was chosen as the name for the newly formed Australian Women’s team.  The inaugural Test Match took place in 1994 and in their 30th anniversary year, the Wallaroos won their first piece of silverware when they captured the WXV 2 title in South Africa.  The elite athletes travel to England later this year for the 10th Women’s Rugby World Cup with their first game on August 23 against Samoa.

Designed by the Mint’s Adam Ball, these coins feature the team’s official logo and colours, with a stadium beneath and two athletes captured mid-play above. The obverse features the effigy of King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne.
