Celebrating 30 Years of the Torres Strait Islander Flag

This year marks 30 years since the Torres Strait Islander Flag was proclaimed an official flag of Australia — a powerful symbol of identity, unity and pride. To honour the occasion, the Mint proudly presents two $2 coins that pay tribute to the enduring spirit and heritage of Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The flag is displayed alongside the Australian flag to acknowledge and celebrate the rich history and diverse cultures of Australia’s First Nation’s peoples.

Designed by Royal Australian Mint coin designer Elyssa Waterford, the coins bring together cultural symbolism and artistic craftsmanship to mark this significant anniversary. The 2025 $2 Fine Silver Proof Coin and the 2025 $2 Coloured Uncirculated Coin both feature the 'C' Mintmark and highlight the strength, identity and connection represented by the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

At the heart of the design are the Dhari and five-pointed star, emblems of deep cultural significance that reflect their central place on the flag. Surrounding them is a circular colour print, with each segment representing the flag’s key colours: green for the land, blue for the sea, and black for the Torres Strait Islander people. Two white stripes encase the Dhari and star, completing the flag’s distinctive visual symbolism.

Beneath the colour print lies a fine pattern inspired by traditional netting and fishing traps. This element represents the knowledge systems and cultural practices of Torres Strait Islander communities and their enduring connection to sea and Country. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne.

The people of the Torres Strait have relied on the sea and land for millennia. It is an integral connection with country, shaping social and cultural practices. The Torres Strait Islander Flag symbolises these fundamental relationships and the pride and unity of the Torres Strait Islander people. 

This release continues the Mint’s commitment to commemorating Australia’s diverse cultural milestones through thoughtfully crafted coin design. A meaningful addition to any $2 collection, these coins not only mark a national milestone but also invite reflection on the rich cultures, stories and contributions of Torres Strait Islander peoples across generations.
