This year marks a significant milestone in Australia’s history, as the Royal Australian Mint celebrates 60 years of producing the nation’s decimal currency. To commemorate this occasion, the Mint is inviting the community to a free Family Fun Day on Saturday, 1 March, from 10am to 4pm.

The Family Fun Day promises a vibrant and engaging experience for visitors of all ages. The grounds surrounding the Mint will come to life with live music, a coin swap, a kids coin trade, food trucks, face painting and more—including activities for both seasoned coin collectors and newcomers to the hobby.  Expert speakers from the Mint will also share fascinating insights into the coin-making process, from design to production.

Royal Australian Mint Acting Chief Executive Officer, Emily Martin, said she was excited to be part of this significant historical milestone.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the Mint’s contribution to Australia over the past six decades,” Ms Martin said.

“Our expert speakers will share insights into coin production and the coin swap and kids coin trade are sure to be a highlight.”

The coin swap allows collectors of all ages to expand their collections by exchanging cash for coins—including hard-to-find and coloured circulating coins. If you are new to coin collecting, this is an easy and inexpensive way to start.

The kids coin trade introduces children aged 5 to 12 to the excitement of coin collecting.  Kids are able to trade some of their ordinary coins for some of the collectible coins the Mint has to offer.

Visitors can also press their own 60th anniversary coin, featuring an exclusive ‘60’ countermark, as a special keepsake of the celebration.

Adding to the excitement, Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre – will bring a dynamic science display and roving performers. Their Excited Particles team will engage audiences with science demonstrations infused with humour and storytelling.

“We’re thrilled to welcome visitors to this special event. Whether you’re a lifelong coin enthusiast or just curious about Australia’s currency, there is something for everyone,” Ms Martin said.

While at the Mint, visitors are encouraged to explore the newly renovated coin museum and the special 60th Anniversary Exhibition.

Families can enjoy a picnic in the covered picnic area or choose from a variety of food options at the Mint Café and local food trucks.

The Royal Australian Mint Family Fun Day takes place on Saturday, 1 March, from 10am to 4pm at Denison Street, Deakin. This family-friendly and wheelchair-accessible event is free to attend, with plenty of on-street parking available.
