The Big Penguin (TAS)
Where else would you find a giant monument penguin, other than in Penguin, Tasmania? That’s right, in a small town called Penguin, in Tassie’s northwest, there’s a three-metre tall black and white penguin – that's one big little penguin.
This Big Penguin, made from fibre glass and concrete, stands proudly on the shore of Penguin Beach and attracts flocks of visitors eager to pose with the handsome bird. With a keen eye for fashion, The Big Penguin has been known to don appropriate outfits, be it a Santa suit at Christmas, bunny outfit at Easter, or a pink number to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Built to celebrate 100 years since the proclamation of the Penguin township, The Big Penguin landed on its perch in 1975. Since then, it's seen hundreds of Little Penguins come to shore each night from the nearby rookery offshore.
So, while little penguins may argue that good things come in small packages, they might just consider The Big Penguin to be the exception to the rule.

The Big Galah (SA)
You’ve heard of a flamin’ galah, but have you heard of The Big Galah? Perched in front of the Half Way Across Australia gem shop in Kimba on the Eyre Highway, this big beauty stands at an impressive eight metres tall.
What started in 1993 as an ambitious family project to attract more visitors to the gem shop, became a huge success with thousands of travellers stopping in the small town to snap a photo alongside the gorgeous galah. It took the Venning family 18 months of shaping metal rods and fibre-glassing the sculpture before the galah looked just right.
In 2021, the larger-than-life bird received a complete makeover for its 30th birthday. Two artists used 32 shades of pink and grey and unveiled the refreshed and vibrant galah to an eagerly awaiting crowd.
The galah species, known for its big personality and cheeky chatter, can now rest assured its eight metre cousin will do them proud as it dazzles road trippers along the Eyre Highway.

The Big Rocking Horse (SA)
Less than an hour’s drive from the Adelaide CBD is one horse that stands out from the crowd – The Big Rocking Horse. And it’s not just big – it's the largest rocking horse in the world, which is quite a claim to fame.
Horse, toy and animal lovers will be delighted when they visit the attraction, which not only boasts the world’s largest rocking horse, but also a seven-acre animal park, wooden toy shop, picnic grounds and a cafe.
The Big Rocking Horse has had quite an evolution from the original large animal onsite, which was a five metre high wooden giraffe, followed by a series of smaller wooden rocking horses. Finally, The Big Rocking Horse was built and, weighing 25 tonnes, it’s not going anywhere quickly.
Climb the stairs, then the ladder to the top of the 18-metre high wooden horse and you’ll be rewarded with a certificate for your efforts. At only $2 per person to climb and with $4 entry to the wildlife park, The Big Rocking Horse in Gumeracha is affordable family fun.

The Big Wheelbarrow (WA)
Aussies are known for their good sense of humour, competitive streak and their love of a good bet and that’s exactly what led to the huge replica wheelbarrow in Port Hedland, Western Australia.
The Big Wheelbarrow is a nod to a bet between two miners in the 1960s that grew to be an annual wheelbarrow event and one of Port Hedland’s most successful fundraisers. The event ran for nearly 40 years and comprised of three activities, including pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with 11 kilograms of iron ore over 120 kilometres, jumping from a moving vehicle and a relay. While successful in raising more than $1 million for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and St John Ambulance, the event came to an end with the introduction of stricter safety rules and increased mining activity in the area.
The photogenic wheelbarrow stands out in the stark landscape, not only for its size, but its bright yellow paintjob. And while the quirky, if risky, wheelbarrow fundraiser has been condemned to history, The Big Wheelbarrow ensures it won’t ever be forgotten.

The Big Prawn (WA)
Coming in at an almighty 2,000 kilograms, you’d be hard pressed to throw this prawn on the barbie. The Big Prawn, in Western Australia’s Exmouth, is four metres long and impressively realistic (if you ignore its size).
Constructed in 2004, The Big Prawn waves its long antennae at people who stop at the Ningaloo Visitor Centre. It was built to commemorate the region’s successful prawning industry, which produces about 900 tonnes of wild-caught prawns each year.
In 2020, The Big Prawn underwent a nine-hour paint job to restore its vibrant red exoskeleton. Big Things enthusiasts be warned – The Big Prawn is no competition for the region’s fierce cyclone season, and it’s stowed away between December and March each year.

The Big Strawberry (VIC)
Sitting pretty on the Goulburn Valley Highway in Koonoomoo, Victoria, is The Big Strawberry. Plump and vibrant red, white and green, The Big Strawberry looks as good as its inspiration tastes. Constructed with 540 metres of steel and layers of fibreglass, The Big Strawberry is six metres high with a five-metre diameter... that’s one sweet strawberry.
A welcome stop for people travelling around Victoria, The Big Strawberry heralds two acres of strawberry fields, a cafe, a playground, a production viewing area and an indoor beehive. All manner of strawberry-flavoured produce can be found, including jam, chutney, sauces, wine and liqueur.
Visitors can pick their own strawberries in season and indulge at the indoor cafe. The impressive playground is ideal for children who need to burn some energy, while the Mancave Memorabilia Museum is a treasure trove of items from yesteryear.

The Big Barramundi (NT)
If you’re hooked on Australia’s Big Things, you might find yourself lured to Wanguri in the Northern Territory to clap eyes on The Big Barramundi to be found in the Wanguri primary school.
Despite being a fish out of water, the sizable barramundi sculpture attracts people from far and wide and perhaps even taunts those who are yet to land themselves a real barramundi.
The Big Barramundi reflects the avid fishing culture of the Northern Territory. Prized by anglers as a good fighting fish, and a tasty one at that, barramundi is a wily species and known to avoid fishing nets.
Whether you’re a novice or experienced fisherperson, the tackle store from which The Big Barramundi launches itself will no doubt have a few tips and tricks to help a real barramundi take your bait – hook, line and sinker.
