On 19 November 1941 HMAS SYDNEY II sank off the coast of Western Australia, taking with her all 645 crewmembers leading to the heaviest loss of life suffered by the Royal Australian Navy in a single engagement. The Royal Australian Mint will pay tribute to the lives lost in this tragic event, and help to keep the memory alive with the production of the $1 Fine Silver Proof Coin dedicated to HMAS SYDNEY II.
$1 Fine Silver Proof Coin - HMAS SYDNEY II
The Royal Australian Mint in Canberra has produced a special $1 Fine Silver collector coin commemorating HMAS SYDNEY II as an acknowledgment of the 645 crewmembers who lost their lives defending Australia. The $1 Fine Silver Coin will belaunched on the deck of SYDNEY IV, successor to SYDNEY II, by:
- Senator Eric Abetz, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence
- Commander Simon Terrence Cullen, Commanding Officer of HMAS SYDNEY IV
- Mr Graeme Moffatt, Controller of the Royal Australian Mint
At the focal point of the coin's design is a representation of SYDNEY II, next to the words 'HMAS SYDNEY II'. A proof finish signifies the coins' mirror-like background contrasted by a raised frosted design, and that every coin was individually struck. Each coin is packaged inside a presentation case and an illustrated outer box appropriate to the theme, as well as featuring a numbered certificate of authenticity. Only 20 000 of these limited mintage coins will be produced. A short account of SYDNEY's story and her battle with the German Kormoran is included with every coin.
Every guest at the launch will receive an aluminium bronze version of the HMAS SYDNEY II coin, presented in specially printed packaging with the words 'The HMAS SYDNEY II coin launch May 2000'.
