Special coin issue for the Snowy Mountains Scheme’s 50th anniversary

Body:

On May 31 the Royal Australian Mint opened its doors to become the venue for the official launch of the ‘Coins of the Snowy Mountains Scheme’ – which is celebrating the 50th anniversary since the beginning of construction.

Mr Joe Hockey, Minister for Financial Services and Regulation, showed the onlooking crowd of Snowy employees how to turn a ‘blank’ into a numismatic show of beauty by striking his own coin on the coining press. Mr Vin Good, the Commissioner for the Snowy Authority, was the lucky recipient of the freshly minted coin – this act signifying the official launch of the coin set.

The ‘Coins of the Snowy Mountains Scheme’ is a set of two fine silver coins, titled ‘Alpine Lake’ and ‘Tunnel in Construction’. Although intended for collector purposes, each coin is Australian legal tender, with a $10 face value.

The set is packaged in an attractive outer box, designed by the daughter of a former Snowy Scheme employee, Jo Mills.
