Last night at a special dinner, in the Great Hall, New Parliament House, the Prime Minister the Hon John Howard presented The Prime Minister's Prize for Science Medallion and other prestigious science awards. The Minister for Science, the Hon Peter McGauren, Presented the Science Minister's Prize, Life Scientist of the Year Medallion and the Malcolm McIntosh Prize, Physical Scientist of the Year.
Behind the scenes many weeks of hard work went into the design and production of the Medallions. The Medallions were the work of the craftsmen at the Royal Australian Mint which was commissioned by the Department of Education, Science and Training to design and manufacture the Prime Minister's Prize as well as, the Science Minister's Prize for Achievement in Life Sciences Medallion and the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Achievement in the Physical Sciences Medallion.
All three Medallions were designed by Wojciech Pietranik, the Mint's internationally renowned designer and engraver. The Prime Minister's Prize for Science Medallion, was manufactured from 6 ? ounces of gold with a central silver inlay on which was 'pad printed' in colour, Australia's Coat of Arms. This is a unique process for a most prestigious prize and added greatly to the medallion's beauty. The medallion is in a Jarrah presentation case along with the Science Prize Lapel Pin which was also produced by the Mint.
The Prime Minister's Prize for Science, open to all Australian scientists, is the country's premier award for excellence in Science. This award highlights the importance of science and innovation to the Nation's prosperity, and celebrates the achievements of outstanding Australian scientists and their contribution to human welfare.
The Science Minister's Prize for Achievement in Life Sciences and the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Achievement in the Physical Sciences recognise outstanding achievement by young Australian scientists in these two fields of science. Both of these medallions are made in antique silver and are also presented in a Jarrah case along with the Science Prize Lapel Pin.
The Mint's acting Controller Dr. P De said that for the Mint to be involved in some small way, in recognition of the importance of science in our life, was a great honour.
The Royal Australian Mint produces a range of exclusive medallions for Government House, the Defence Forces, government and private bodies as well as private companies. It also produces a range of limited edition lapel badges for important events.
