New effigy of Her Majesty the Queen

Body:

For only the fourth time since the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the obverse of legal tender Australian coins displays a new effigy of Her Majesty.

The Royal Australian Mint began featuring the new portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley on selected collector coins during 1998, and later this year will see the first-time release of the new effigy on general circulation coins.

As a tribute to The Queen, the Mint will produce a $1 Fine Silver Proof Coin titled Majestic Images. This 40 mm one-time-release coin displays the new effigy on the obverse, and all past effigies overlapping each other on the reverse.

This is the only Australian legal tender coin to feature all effigies of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Australia’s first effigy of Her Majesty was designed by Mary Gillick (1953). In 1966 appeared Arnold Machin’s creation for the introduction of Australia’s decimal currency. Since 1985 all Australian legal tender coins produced carried an effigy designed by Raphael Maklouf.

The $1 Majestic Images coin will retail for $47.75.

Orders for this special coin should be placed with the Royal Australian Mint on 1300 652 020 by 15 March 1999.
