Mint drives down memory lane with Holden Heritage classic cars and classic coins

In celebration of 160 years of the Australian icon Holden, the Royal Australian Mint (the Mint) is taking the wheel to officially launch the Holden Heritage Coin Collection, bringing together eleven classic Holden cars featured on the newest special colour printed collectible coins.

Mint Condition, the first ever car show to be held at the Mint, will showcase classic Holden cars from the 1950s to the 1990s evoking memories and nostalgia from many.

Royal Australian Mint General Manager of Sales, Marketing and Distribution Mr Mark Cartwright said that this Holden Heritage Coin Collection recognises the instrumental role Holden cars have played in Australian history.

“As Australian culture has developed over the years you can see Holden mirroring these changes to suit the Australian lifestyle; this can be witnessed simply by looking at the classic Holden car models,” said Mr Cartwright.

“The Mint is really excited to be able to take the public on this journey tomorrow and for those who can’t make it, they can easily buy their favourite car on a coin and enjoy the memories.”

The classic cars on show will be the 48-215 (FX), FJ, FE, FC, EH, FB, HK Monaro, LJ Torana, HQ Monaro, HX Sandman and Commodore.

These cars are considered a true representation of the past six decades of Holden’s motoring history in Australia, but it should be noted that Holden’s rich history started well before the first all Australian car was released in 1948.

Holden began as a saddlery in Adelaide in 1856, moving into the auto industry in the early 1900s and this partnership between the Mint and Holden celebrates that relationship with Australia.

There will be a number of recognisable cars at the event including one of the very first, the 48-215 and the LJ Torana which is actually the exact same car that featured in the iconic advertisement.

Mint Condition Holden Heritage Car Show will be held at the Mint from 10 am to 2 pm tomorrow, Saturday 20 August 2016. Weather permitting – please keep an eye on the Mint’s website. For more information on the Car Show please visit

With the pre-order allocation of the complete Collection (RRP $160) selling out within a matter of days, there will only be a small amount on sale at the Car Show. Each car coin will be sold separately and available on the day or online ($15 each):
