The Millennium Series: The Past | The first 'millennium coin' struck by the Royal Australian Mint

Body:

A special coin series, not for general circulation, has been released by the Royal Australian Mint. The Millennium Coin Series comprises three $10 bimetallic coins titled The Past, The Present and The Future, which will be released progressively in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Each coin will reflect its theme from a uniquely Australian perspective.

The Mint extended an invitation to students, graduates or staff members of tertiary art or design colleges or faculties to design the coins for the Millennium Coin Series. Mr Moffatt, the Mint’s Controller said: "The Mint was dedicated to representing Australia’s culture by Australian people". Mr Peter Soobik from Orange, NSW, was the design winner.

The first coin in the Millennium Coin Series, titled The Past, dated 1999 is available from the Royal Australian Mint by calling 1300 652 020.

Symbolism of The Past coin:

The significance of memories and past events has the power to make individuals and nations stop and reflect. The change of millennium is one such occasion. To celebrate, the Royal Australian Mint has released a $10 bimetallic proof coin titled The Past. It is part of a three-year series, titled the Millennium Coin Series, and will be followed by The Present and The Future.
