Coins to mark Snowy Mountains Scheme Anniversary

One of two commemorative coins that mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the Snowy Mountains Scheme will be struck at the Royal Australian Mint on Monday.

The Minister for Financial Services and Regulation, the Hon Joe Hockey MP and the Commissioner of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority, Mr Vin Good, will strike the coin — watched by a group of former workers who built the Scheme.

Special guests at the ceremony will include:

  • Mr Charlie Salvestro — one of the former workers on the Snowy Mountains Scheme who worked underground in the tunnels like those depicted on coins.
  • Trevor Prior — one of the Authority’s staff and 1988 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Apprentice of the Year.
  • About 30 former Snowy Mountains Scheme workers who will represent the 100,000 people who built the Scheme.
