The Royal Australian Mint (the Mint) has today released 12 new uncirculated fifty cent coins each showcasing a different Ford or Holden motorsport vehicle. To coincide with the coin’s release, the Mint has launched Australia’s first Reverendum which will decide the country’s favourite Holden and Ford motorsport cars.
“The new 2018 Motorsport coin collection celebrates the history of Holden, Ford and Australia’s long held love of racing. Coins and cars are hot topics in collectibles, making this the perfect partnership,” says Ross MacDiarmid, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Australian Mint.
“To celebrate the new coins, we are calling on all Aussies to have their say in Australia’s first ever Reverendum. Whether you prefer the classic Holden 1970 HT Monaro or the 1996 VR Commodore HRT, it’s your chance to have a say! Ford fans will be able to select from the Ford 1969 Boss 302 Mustang Trans-AM and the 1977 XC Falcon Hardtop amongst others,” said MacDiarmid.
To take part in the Reverendum, fans can cast their vote for their favourite motorsport car of all time on either the Ford or Holden dedicated websites at ReverendumBlue.com.au or ReverendumRed.com.au. Voting is available for two weeks, after which Australia’s favourite Ford and Holden vehicles will be announced.
A total of 30,000 coins of each design (a total of 360,000) have been released for purchase in a presentation card with the vehicle information. Whilst the coins are expected to be collector’s treasure, they are legal tender.
