The brand new range of 2008 collector coins shined in a special Mint movie premiere at the Royal Australian Mint on Wednesday 31 October. The evening included red carpet interviews with Hollywood style reporters, popcorn, Malteasers and of course the stars of the evening, the 2008 product range. The special movie presentation, which is available to watch online, launched the Mint 2008 collector products including the; 2008 Year Sets - International Year of Planet Earth, 2008 Centenary of Rugby League $1 Uncirculated Coin, 2008 Kangaroo at Sunset, 2008 Kangaroo coins by Reg Mombassa, the 2008 Baby Set and the 2008 Wedding Set.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement that the theme for the 2008 Year Set is the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). The Royal Australian Mint, in partnership with Geoscience Australia, has developed this stunning year set with the aim of raising awareness about how geoscience can assist in: improving our management of land, water, energy and mineral resources; minimising loss of life and property from natural disasters; and protecting and sustaining our quality of life. Dr. Ian Lambert from Geoscience Australia was a special guest speaker about IPYE. "(IPYE)" aims to bring together the international knowledge base of geoscience and demonstrate the new and exciting ways in which Earth scientists can help meet the challenges we face in ensuring a safer, healthier and more prosperous world" said Dr. Lambert.
The first of the Mint's 2008 Centenary of Rugby League coins, a $1 uncirculated aluminium bronze coin featuring the Centenary of Rugby League logo, was also a feature product of the launch. NRL CEO Mr David Gallop, ARL CEO Mr Geoff Carr, and Raiders Captain Mr Allan Tongue were special guests at the event. "Commemorative coins have marked many of the landmark events in Australian history and it's a tribute to the game that the Centenary of Rugby League is being included in that company" said NRL CEO Mr David Gallop. "It is a unique collectible for fans and a symbol of the significant place Rugby League holds in our community" he continued.
