Expected to be one of the Mint’s most popular New Year celebrations yet, collectors will have the opportunity to say goodbye to 2016 and welcome 2017 with the hotly-anticipated first and last coin of the year traditions.
Farewell 2016 and the 50th anniversary of decimal currency where it all began – at the Mint! At 3.45 pm on Saturday 31 December 2016 we will be drawing the name of a lucky entrant to have the exclusive chance to strike the final coin of the year. The rules are the same each year; you have to be in it to win it! Last tickets will be given out at 3.40 pm, directly followed by the draw. Only the people present at this time will be given this opportunity. The winner will not only receive the highly sought-after final coin of the year, but it will be accompanied by a certificate authenticating their piece. Please note the winner of the raffle will be required to purchase the coin for $3.00.
With 2017 almost upon us, the excitement has begun for the unveiling of the Visitor Press design to be featured throughout the year. Be one of the first 100 to uncover the theme and strike a coin in the New Year. Make sure you are here at 10 am on Sunday 1 January 2017 when we open our doors for the first time in the New Year. Coffee will be available for purchase for those waiting in the queue from 8.00 am.
For all those visiting, we will have an extra number of Public Tours scheduled. Please keep in mind that the factory will not be in production from Christmas Day and will reopen on Wednesday 4 January 2017. Visitors can still peer down into the factory space and enjoy our interactive touchscreens which can take you behind the scenes and teach you all about the process of making coins!
