Gallery Press Limits

Due to anticipated high visitor numbers over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, the Mint will be applying limits to the number of coins customers can strike on the Mint’s gallery presses.
 

These special limits will apply from Monday 26 December 2022 – Sunday 15 January and will be adjusted based on capacity and demand. Limits will be listed on the Gallery Presses and updated as required.
 

The limits for Saturday 31 December & Sunday 1 January will be 1 coin per customer per day.

Outside these dates the normal limits will apply.

Christmas Holiday Opening Hours and Tour Times

The Royal Australian Mint team would like to take this opportunity to wish our collectors and visitors a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season.

If you find yourself in Canberra during your holiday, be sure to visit the Mint where you can take a free tour, strike a coin, or enjoy a relaxing coffee at the café.

When planning your visit please keep in mind that the Mint will be closed on Christmas Day and the factory will not be in operation from close of business Friday 23 December 2022 and will reopen on Tuesday 3 January 2023.

2023 Mintmark Suite Release Update

The release of the 2023 Mintmark suite, listed below, will be delayed until 8.30am AEDT Thursday 2 February 2023.

This change will not affect the Last and First Coin of the Year events.

Last and First Coin of the Year Events

Last Coin of the Year

Join us at the Mint on the last day of the year for your chance to secure the last coins produced for the year.

On December 31 at 3:45 pm, the Mint will hold a draw at the Mint to select the last ten customers to strike a coin in 2022. Each lucky winner will then enter the Mint to strike their coin and receive a certificate authenticating their last coin for 2022.

Due to health and safety concerns, the Mint requests no visitors queue at the Mint prior to 1.00 pm on New Year’s Eve.

The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse - FAQs

Q. What is the difference between the current obverse and The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse?

A. The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse is identical to existing obverse designs and features the Jody Clark effigy. The only difference is the addition of Her Majesty’s years of reign – 1952 – 2022.

This year, the Mint will close at 4.00pm AEDT Saturday 24 December 2022, reopening at 10.00am AEDT on Boxing Day (Monday, 26 December 2022)

When planning your visit, please keep in mind that the factory will not be in production from close of business Friday 23 December 2022 and will reopen on Tuesday 3 January 2023.

It’s Mint to Be - The Mint wins at the Canberra Region Tourism Awards

The 2022 Canberra Region Tourism Awards took place on Friday 25 November 2022 at the Parliament House. This special gala ceremony brings together the tourism excellence that Canberra has to offer.

The Royal Australian Mint was honoured to take home the Cultural Tourism Award and the People’s Choice Award for Favourite Attraction.

In the past year we've seen 257,531 visitors to the Mint including 43,723 students.

Change of Sovereign - FAQs

Q. Who will be on Australia’s new coins?

A. The obverse of Australian coins are struck with an image of the reigning Sovereign.

Q. When will a new effigy appear on our coins?

A. Arrangements for the King Charles III effigy are still being finalised by the Australian Government.  

Q. What is the process for changing the effigy used on coins for a new Sovereign?

The Royal Australian Mint’s flags fly at half-mast and production of coins has been halted for today, as the Mint joins Australia and its fellow Commonwealth nations in honouring and paying respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her passing. Since being opened by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in 1965, the Royal Australian Mint has produced over 15 billion decimal coins bearing the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Mini-Minties: Blooming Blossoms

Spring has sprung at the Mint! Come along for a fantastical and imaginative Mini-Minties workshop about flowers and spring time. Your 4-6 year old will explore the theme through lots of fun singing, dancing, story-telling and art.

When: Friday 30th September 2022

Time: 10.30am to 11.15am

Cost: $10 (plus booking fee). Ticket includes one adult and one child.

Family Tours

Come along to our Family Tours!

Explore some of Australia’s favourite animals and how they’re represented on Aussie coins. The tour will be followed by some fun craft activities. Aimed at children aged between 5-11 years. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

2022 Easter Opening Hours

The Mint’s call centre be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. If you would like to place an order during this time, please visit the Mint’s online store.

While the factory will not be in operation over the Easter long weekend, we are pleased to offer our shop, tours, exhibitions and interactive features to give our visitors many varied ways to experience the Mint and discover our stories.
