Centenary coin a real opener at ODI

Tuesday 5th February 2013

The Mint will be embracing the Australian spirit at Manuka Oval tomorrow, as they will be bringing thousands of the new 2013 Centenary of Canberra 20c circulating coin to the One Day International at Manuka Oval ready for punters to swap both inside and outside the gates.

The 2013 Centenary of Canberra 20c circulating coin proved to be popular at the Prime Minister’s XI at Manuka Oval last Tuesday, with over 9500 coins swapped on the day.

“The response to the release of the 2013 Centenary of Canberra 20c coin has been overwhelmingly positive. Canberrans have been really eager to get behind the celebration and collect a tangible memento of Canberra’s centenary year,” said Royal Australian Mint CEO Ross MacDiarmid.

As there will be a Mint stand both inside and outside the gates at Manuka Oval tomorrow, people will not need a ticket to the cricket to get their hands on one.

A Centenary of Canberra coin will also be used to begin tomorrow’s match in the coin toss, but it’s a brand new $5 silver proof coin which will not be released into circulation. The 2013 Centenary of Canberra $5 silver proof coin will be available to buy from the Mint stands at Manuka Oval tomorrow.

“There was a lot of anticipation around the release of the 2013 Centenary of Canberra $5 silver proof coin, people were lined up in front of the Mint yesterday before the shop had even opened to be one of the first to get their hands on one,” said Mr MacDiarmid.

The Mint will be onsite ready to swap coins from 12 noon at Manuka Oval tomorrow, Wednesday 6 February 2013. The public should keep an eye on Mint’s Facebook page and Twitter feed for any event updates.
