Ashes design coin used in Adelaide toss sold at auction for $8125

11th December 2006

The coin used in the toss of the 3 mobile Ashes Test in Adelaide sold at auction last week for $8125 with proceeds going to Cricket Australia's official community partner, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

The Royal Australian Mint donated five (5) coins to Cricket Australia, one for each Test of the 3 mobile Ashes Series.

The successful bidder, who wished to remain anonymous, said "I have a strong numismatic interest as well as, obviously, cricket. All of this combined with the wonderful work done by the RFDS meant that this framed Ashes toss coin was an irresistible opportunity to commemorate one of cricket's greatest Tests with my other passions. I hope this helps the Flying Doctor service continue to conduct their great work."

The coin used in the toss of the 3 mobile Ashes Test in Brisbane sold at auction for $5080 to a regional Queensland Doctor, who regularly uses the services of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The coins will individually be auctioned by Legends Genuine Memorabilia, with each auction closing the day after the 5th day of each match. Fans can visit www.lgm.com.au to make an online bid for the actual coin used in each toss.

Each of the 1882-2007 Ashes silver proof coins to be auctioned are framed with a photo of the Captains at the coin toss, and a signed certificate of authenticity. Also presented with the coin is its display case made of kookaburra-like red leather with printed stitching representative of the well known 6 stitch cricket ball used in the 3 mobile Ashes Test series.

The Royal Australian Mint has produced a coin range commemorating this summer's 3 mobile Ashes Series that includes a gold and silver proof coin, and an uncirculated coin. These coins feature the famous Ashes urn flanked by the Australian kangaroo and English lion, two iconic symbols of both countries.
