Own the Royal Australian Mint coin used in the 3 mobile Ashes Series coin toss
23rd November 2006
The Royal Australian Mint is offering cricket fans the chance to own the commemorative coins used by Ricky Ponting and Andrew Flintoff from the coin toss at each of the 3 mobile Ashes Series Test matches this summer.
At the beginning of the first 3 mobile Ashes Series Test today, the Treasurer, the Hon. Peter Costello MP presented James Sutherland, CEO of Cricket Australia, with five (5) specially designed silver Ashes coins from the Royal Australian Mint.
These coins will be used in the coin toss at each match of the 3 mobile Ashes Series Tests. Each coin will be auctioned after each match to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).
The Royal Australian Mint has produced a coin range commemorating this summer's 3 mobile Ashes Series, that includes a $10 gold proof coin, $5 silver proof coin and a $1 uncirculated coin, which feature the famous Ashes urn flanked by the Australian kangaroo and English lion, two iconic symbols of both countries. Five of the $5 silver proof coins from this coin range are to be used in the coin toss for each 3 mobile Ashes Test.
"The Royal Australian Mint is internationally renowned for producing world class quality coins, and the 1882-2007 Ashes coin range is no exception. The Royal Australian Mint is delighted to have produced the coins used in the toss of this prestigious 3 mobile Ashes Test Series, and it is fantastic that proceeds of the auction of these coins are going to a charity," said the Hon. Peter Costello MP.
CEO of Cricket Australia, James Sutherland, thanked the Treasurer and the Royal Australian Mint for its generous donation of the coins for use during the 3 Mobile Ashes Series. He said: "All proceeds of the auction are going to Cricket Australia's official community partner, the Royal Flying Doctor Service. We will work closely with RAM, RFDS and Legends Genuine Memorabilia to auction these pieces of Ashes history after each 3 mobile Ashes Test. It is a fantastic opportunity for the true cricket enthusiast to get a very special memento of this highly-anticipated series."
The coins will individually be auctioned by Legends Genuine Memorabilia, with each auction closing the day after the 5th day of each match. Fans can visit www.lgm.com.au to make an online bid for the actual coin used in each toss.
Each of the 1882-2007 Ashes $5 silver proof coins to be auctioned are presented with a signed certificate of authenticity and in a display case made of kookaburra-like red leather with printed stitching representative of the well known 6 stitch cricket ball used in the 3 mobile Ashes Test series.
