Security review at the Royal Australian Mint

17th February 2006

The Royal Australian Mint has extensive security procedures in place that have been the subject of three recent reviews. The Mint has engaged the Australian Federal Police Protective Services to carry out an urgent review of its physical security arrangements to identify any weaknesses in the current system, and to recommend required corrective actions.

Mr William Grzeskowiak has been charged with the theft of more than $6000 from the Royal Australian Mint. Mr Grzeskowiak has worked at the Mint as a contractor, engaged through an employment company. We understand that a further quantity of over $100 000 in minted coins has also been seized from premises in Queanbeyan.

It is envisaged that recommendations will be received by 23 February 2006.
