The rare and hard working mallee fowl highlighted in Royal Australian Mint coin release

13th July 2005

One of Australia's rarest birds, the Mallee Fowl is the focus of the new Gold Coin Release by the Royal Australian Mint. This coin will be released on the 14th of July and has been crafted in solid 24 carat gold as the second release in the Mint's Rare Bird Series.

Available in both $150 and $200 denominations these coins have been carefully crafted to the Royal Australian Mint's highest standards. Master Designer Wojciech Pietranik has beautifully captured the image of the Mallee Fowl at work in its natural bush environment.

Dr Vivienne Thom, Controller of the Mint said "It is hoped that the release of this coin will help raise the profile of the plight of the Mallee Fowl and assist in educating Australians to help preserve our endangered wildlife."

The Rare Birds Series is designed to bring attention to three of the countries rarest birds. Highlighted first in the series was the beautiful yet highly aggressive Cassowary. Following the current release of the Mallee Fowl will be the South-Eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo Gold Coin, which will be issued in 2006.

The Mallee Fowl Gold Coin, second in the Royal Australian Mint's Rare Birds Gold Series Coins will be available from 14 July 2005 with just 2,500 to be minted.
