Royal Australian Mint provides historic coin opportunity for Tasmanians

A special opportunity to strike a mintmark to celebrate an historic occasion will be available to residents and visitors to Hobart from Friday 13 August to Sunday 15 August 2004.
Tasmanians and visitors will be able to strike the 'H' mintmark on a coin during a three-day visit to Hobart by the Royal Australian Mint.
The coin design celebrates the Bicentenary of Tasmania and features the ship the Lady Nelson, plus a unique 'H' mintmark. A Mintmark is a letter struck onto a coin to designate the striking of that coin in a particular geographic area.
"We are thrilled to offer the residents of Tasmania the opportunity to create their own special piece of history," said Dr Vivienne Thom, Controller, Royal Australian Mint. "A specific Mintmark is quite an honour for a coin and I am sure it will have strong appeal for many collectors, apart from the sentiment created by a coin identifying a particular location. This is the first time that an Australian $5 coin will bear an "H" mintmark".
The Mint has been working closely with the Tasmanian Bicentenary Committee to produce a coin that commemorates the historic 200-year milestone of European settlement in the island state.
The $5 collector coin, with the 'H' Mintmark retails for $14.95.
