Are the ‘Holey Dollar’ and ‘Dump’ coins still legal tender?

The Holey Dollar and Dump are the only Australian coins which have had their ‘legal tender’ status removed, or been ‘demonetised’.

Launch of the Eureka $1 silver proof coin, Eureka $1 'E' mintmark coin and the Eureka montage

To commemorate the 150 - year anniversary of the Eureka Stockade the Royal Australian Mint is releasing the 'E' mintmark, the $1 Silver Proof Coin, and the 150th Anniversary Limited Edition Eureka Montage.

These limited edition collector items will be launched on Friday 27th February at 10.30am at the Eureka Centre Ballarat by the Controller of the Royal Australian Mint, Dr Vivienne Thom and Professor Weston Bate OAM, President of the Royal Historical Society Victoria.

The Eureka Centre is situated on the site where the violent uprising took place. The Eureka Stockade is considered one of the most significant events in the evolution of Australian democracy.

The Royal Australian Mint will be on site for a three-day period, from Friday 27th February until Sunday 29th February. The Mint is bringing a mintmark press and visitors will have the opportunity to press their own letter 'E' for Eureka on the pre stuck $1 aluminium bronze coin.
