Are the ‘Holey Dollar’ and ‘Dump’ coins still legal tender?

The Holey Dollar and Dump are the only Australian coins which have had their ‘legal tender’ status removed, or been ‘demonetised’.

The Mint is closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday.

The winner of the 2003 Secrets of the Mint competition

The winner of the 2003 Secrets of the Mint competition was Michael Hollamby from Waikerie South Australia.

On 19th January Michael and Rebecca visited the Mint and was taken on an extensive tour of the design and production areas, by Bruce Valentine from the Engineering, Research & Development team.

Seen here minting a coin in the Proof Coining Hall, Michael was intrigued with the manufacturing process of both circulating and collector coins. The behind the scenes tour provide insights that delighted Michael and added to his fascination with collecting coins.
