The Queen approves design for the Queen Mother coin

The Queen has approved the design of the planned coin to be issued by the Royal Australian Mint which will pay tribute to the Queen Mother whose life spanned the entire period of Federation in Australia.
The design details, released today, highlight the Queen Mother's connections with Australia, depicting the Queen Mother as a young woman on her first visit to Australia in 1927. She travelled to Australia as Duchess of York with the then Duke of York (who later became King George VI) in 1927 and on 9 May 1927 was at the formal opening of the Parliament building in Canberra.
The design is based on a photograph of the Duchess of York (as she then was) attending the Adelaide Cup at the Morphetville Race Course, South Australia, in May 1927 (exactly 75 years ago this month). Surrounding the image of the Queen Mother is a circle of wattle blossoms intertwined with 'Elizabeth of Glamis' rose blooms.
This one ounce pure silver proof coin comes in a presentation case together with a 16 page booklet. The coin has a face value of $5 and will retail for $45 each and is expected to be available around the middle of June from the Mint. The international mintage of this coin will be limited to only 30,000.
