Victorian coin to commemorate Centenary of Federation

Victorian students' design for 20c coin to be unveiled by Minister on 3 May, 2001

23rd April 2001

A new commemorative 20c coin for Victoria, jointly designed by two Victorian primary school students, will be unveiled on Thursday, 3 May, 2001.

The Federal Minister for the Arts and the Centenary of Federation, The Hon Peter McGauran, MP will unveil the 20c coin jointly designed by school friends Ryan Ladd and Mark Kennedy at a morning function at Lara Lake Primary School.

Mark and Ryan developed their joint design in response to a national competition run by the Royal Australian Mint during late 2000 when they were Year 5 students at Lara Lake Primary School. Their design was selected from over 800 entries from approximately 270 schools throughout Victoria.

The Victorian student design is part of a series of coins produced by the Royal Australian Mint for each State and self-governing Territory to commemorate the Centenary of Federation.

The 20c coin featuring the design by Mark and Ryan will be released as part of a three coin collector set for Victoria on 3 May, 2001 as the State prepares for its major celebrations for the Centenary of Federation. The coin will be released into circulation during the second half of the year.
